Clear Lens Exchange (CLE) is an advanced method for eliminating reading glasses and giving you near, mid-range and distance vision through the use of multifocal intraocular lenses. Eventually, most people are going to need lens replacement because of cataracts. Those that have CLE instead of LASIK won’t need cataract surgery.
CLE is also used instead of LASIK to treat higher levels of farsightedness in patients over the age of forty. The optical results are superior to laser vision correction (e.g., LASIK or PRK) for these higher corrections.
CLE involves removing the eye's lens, just like in cataract surgery. This is done with a special ultrasound instrument and may be accompanied by eye drop anesthesia. A flexible synthetic lens implant (IOL) of the proper power to correct the refractive error is then placed inside the eye through an extremely small incision.
This outpatient procedure is typically pain free, takes 20 minutes or less to perform, and does not require stitches. Visual recovery is quite rapid. As with LASIK, most clear lens exchange patients are able to return to work the day following their procedure.
